Where does this new happiness come from? I am like a tree, formerly stunted under the canopy of an older tree, suddenly having a growth spurt as the older tree decays and falls. My leaves are a garland of celebration, shelter for the birds as spring days lead to summer. A mother bird teaches the fledglings to fly and I move with the same wobbly enthusiasm. I feel as though I am newly sighted. Colours dazzle and fill me with wonderment that such variety should exist. Everything feels generous and bountiful, my growth an exuberant vine. When darkness comes again, it will come on velvety paws. When I awake, I will turn my eyes to the window where the sun is pouring like breakfast honey and morning is a light song. Bubbling rises in my throat to sing along. I am laying down my burdens, looking out over the rise and into the valleys, pitching my tent in this wild, beautiful and sometimes dangerous life.... |
