Poem: There were moments that I can't easily think of,
when I saw the surfaces shimmer
like waves of heat, dissipating into the night.
When I saw what lay beneath
although I couldn't comprehend it.

My grandfather entered my room
like a soft-footed cat.
As he closed the curtain behind him and came closer,
what was there to do but remain close-eyed
and disappear into waiting?
Throughout the night my fears and I turned together.
I don't know how he could do it,
what he was thinking, as I broke into pieces.
I didn't even have the words.

I follow the footsteps where he has been,
he pervades everything.

I want to embrace life's goodness
as well as its struggle and pain.
Ultimately I want to dance victoriously
over his form of damage and death.
Speaking with my own words,
that's the beginning....
