The mothers watch their children, Like rare butterflies, Pinned in the swimming lanes. The chlorine air fogs lungs. Small arms reach over goggles. Mouths point upwards above the water for air. Week after week we return to the lesson time. I send you into the pool wearing goggles. Your face eager to learn and your body eager, To splash under and against the water. The swim coach guides you free of me gently, Into an aquatic mastery of your own. ... |
